WHAM Theatre Schools - SEND Policy (2025)

1. Non-SEND Specific Classes

Enrolment & Disclosure:

  • All children are welcome, including those with SEND, where reasonable adjustments can be made within our standard class structure and resources.
  • Parents/Guardians must disclose any SEND requirements during the enrolment process so we can assess suitability and discuss possible adjustments.

Staffing:

  • Team Members/Teachers are not Specific SEND Specialists but do receive additional training to understand and adapt for children with SEND.
  • No personal care is provided under any circumstances.

Parent/Guardian Presence:

  • Parents/Guardians are not permitted to stay in class, except in rare cases where no other alternative can be met, and only if it is in the best interests of both the child and the group dynamic.
  • In such cases, Principal approval is required. Any adult permitted to stay must undertake staff training and is expected to act in accordance with all staff policies and safeguarding requirements, to protect all students and the team.
  • Any parent or adult who needs to be present in class must also complete a voluntary Enhanced DBS check, which is chargeable.
  • This is standard practice for safeguarding and to support children’s independence.

Adjustments & Suitability:

  • Reasonable adjustments are considered on a case-by-case basis, but not all needs can be met in a mainstream group setting.
  • Trial classes are available to assess suitability.
  • If a child cannot settle or is distressed, Parents/Guardians will be contacted immediately.

Activities & Adaptation:

  • Activities are adapted wherever possible to support all children in feeling included and comfortable. While we may not always be able to change a lesson theme or activity to suit individual preferences, our team are understanding and will always do their best to help each child feel comfortable, included, and supported within the group.
  • We aim to create a welcoming environment where every child’s needs are considered. “Safe spaces”, such as sensory hideouts, fidget toys, and quiet areas, are available for any child who needs time to regulate or step away from the main activity.
  • Changes are made with the needs of the group as a whole in mind, and we always strive to make our sessions accessible and positive for everyone.

Safeguarding:

  • All staff hold Enhanced DBS checks.
  • Safeguarding and behaviour policies apply equally to all students & adults.
  • Additional adults are not permitted in class, regardless of DBS status, except as outlined above, due to increased safeguarding risk.

Communication & Progress:

  • Ongoing communication with Parents/Guardians is encouraged.
  • Progress is shared through Watching Weeks, videos, and yearly reports.
