Hello everyone! I'm Mark, the Proud Head Principal & Franchisor of WHAM Theatre Schools. Welcome to our WHAM Music Academy in Sunderland!
Our Group Keyboard classes run every week during term time in and around Sunderland after school.
At WHAM, we want our students to feel included, content, and part of something special! We're passionate about sharing the magic of the arts with our students, parents and , guardians. Even though learning a Musical Instrument is certainly no mean feat, it has so many benefits for young people:
- FOCUS AND PATIENCE. Learning a song teaches children that sticking at something pays off. It is a simple way to build concentration.
- COORDINATION. Using eyes, ears, and hands together helps develop motor skills. It is a practical way to improve physical awareness.
- LOGICAL THINKING. Understanding rhythm and timing helps with patterns and counting. It is a creative way to practice maths.
- CONFIDENCE. There is a real sense of pride when they master a piece of music. It gives their self-esteem a genuine boost.
- WELLBEING. Playing an instrument provides a calm outlet. It helps children relax and express themselves after school.

Meet our Team
Mark
Head Principal of WHAM Theatre Schools & Introductory Keyboard Teacher
Mark has been working in the Performing Arts Industry as a Freelancer, Performer, and Children's Activity Educator since 2008, after graduating with a BA (Hons) in Commercial Music from Canterbury Christ Church University. Alongside this, Mark holds a BTEC ND in Music Practice, a teaching qualification (PTTLLS) as well as Grade V Theory from the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM).
In this time, he has been a Freelance Vocal, Keyboards/Piano, and Music Technology Tutor working with children from the ages of 3, all the way up to adults. Alongside this, he's also been a working musician & vocalist, alongside offering services as a freelance production specialist.
In 2011, he became a Principal & Academy owner for Pauline Quirke's Weekend Drama Schools, The Pauline Quirke Academy of Performing Arts. During this time, he opened Weekend Academies in Upminster, Thurrock, Canterbury and Dartford. He left this role in 2017 to work for Universal Music, becoming a Campus Manager for Abbey Road Institute, based at London's Iconic, Abbey Road Studios.
Today, Mark's passion and aim is ensuring Young People are supported & encouraged positively in a safe and happy environment. He understands how challenging and difficult it is for children in mainstream education to navigate not only their skills, but their feelings too. This ethos is consistent across WHAM Theatre Schools as a whole. Our group keyboard classes offer a more affordable rate, and, a more flexible way for children & young people to learn a new instrument.
